Today is Sunday, 6th of February and its sunny and 15c/59f and it feels fantastic. We've had some unbelievably wild weather these past couple of weeks. 62 knot winds the other night had us wishing we were on the hook instead of sandwiched between boats knocking together like click-clack toys from the 70s. The yacht next to ours is far bigger and the winds pushed it so hard into us for hours on end one of our big ball fenders popped. Albeit an old fender, the force to do that still has to be immense. Even with our sails safely tucked away the wind pushes the mast (and boat) so hard on the lines a brand new mooring line (purchased a few weeks ago) chafed and snapped. And all that fun was in addition to torrential rains and hail. During those weather events we find being on the hook safer to the marina. Despite it all we're having the time of our life. Once again, work gets in the way for me, but the views out my office window make it all worth it. I am determined to get a SLOG done every two weeks. Right now there just isn't much to report on…
I'm super excited to go morel mushroom hunting while here. Apparently Turkey is reknowned for its morels and I hope I can find a few myself. If not, there is always the market and I'll pay whatever they ask as they are truly worth it.
Last week we received our residency permits which allow us to be here for up to a year and I intend to explore as much as I can and take you with me. Speaking of taking you with us, have you looked into flights to Dalaman yet (see the CALENDAR tab on the home page)? July is booked up so get on it! We can't wait to share the bounty of Turkey with our friends. August is going to be very, very hot so we recommend May-June unless you are a serious sun worshipper OR you prefer to be in a villa in the mountains and just do day trips out on the boat. Your choice, not everyone is made for 24/7 boat life.
I missed posting the above words last week (it is now 15th of February) as computer issues took over my world and we found ourselves desperately trying to find a Mac repair shop. I've borrowed a Mac Mini from a friend to get by with while a man I've never met tries to repair it. After 3 solid curse infested days I gave up. This is also why you'll not be getting photos with this post, I'm keeping it simple to just give you an update of life in a third world country in the digital age. I'll spare you the gory details of getting wireless internet in bad weather with several hundred metal masts in the way bobbing all around…
With all the tech gadgets we have on board Belvedere Jeff now finds himself being a projectionist with his Epson EF-12 laser projector and 150-inch screen that he sets up in the library on Sunday nights. We even have popcorn from the restaurant and it is made the proper way—on the stove. The Turks, like me, know how important popcorn is to life so its yet another reason to love it here. I've a video to show you that I'll upload soon.
I'll write more this weekend and include pics if I get my machine back in time. Until then, güle güle.
